San Andreas Chapter Awards

Lucy Steelman Award         Mark H. Baer Award

Lucy Steelman Award

The Lucy Steelman Award was established in 2006 to recognize a San Andreas Chapter member who has mentored colleagues in any number of ways. Lucy Steelman was recognized as an energetic, encouraging, and supportive colleague. She was among the earliest to understand the advantages of technology in corporate libraries and implemented electronic resources at SRI where she worked for many years. She carried this through by promoting member communication through the Chapter’s web site.

Lucy once indicated that she derived great satisfaction from the fact that her SRI clients considered her their champion, especially since she regarded them as the library’s true champions. And again, Lucy carried this through as a champion for SLA. She was active in the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter before the San Andreas Chapter was formed, and then active in San Andreas for her remaining years. She taught professional development workshops, hosted Chapter events at SRI, chaired the professional development, hospitality and consultation committees, and served during her retirement as Chapter president in 2000-2001. After a brief struggle with acute myeloid leukemia, Lucy passed away on December 2, 2003.

Mark H. Baer Award

The Mark H. Baer Award was established in 1990 to recognize a San Andreas Chapter member who has contributed to the Chapter or to the profession either during the current year or throughout their career. Mr. Baer is recognized as the "founder of the San Andreas Chapter." After joining the Special Libraries Association in 1957, Mark served in many chapter, division and national offices. He served as president of the San Francisco Bay Region Chapter in 1965/1966, as president of SLA in 1976/1977, and was named to the SLA Hall of Fame in 1984. When the San Andreas Chapter was formed, he served as its provisional president.
